IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It is a type of laser that is used to help remove brown and red spots from your skin. IPL is a popular non-invasive cosmetic treatment that uses light energy to treat a variety of skin conditions, including hyperpigmentation, dark spots, red marks and telangiectasias.
IPL uses energy bursts of light in short pulses to target melanin and hemoglobin. When set to target hemoglobin it gets rid of red spots. When set to target melanin it gets rid of brown spots. Melanin is the substance that causes dark spots on your skin. This technology can be used to safely reduce the appearance of pigmentation and age spots, and improve skin texture, tone and clarity. The result is a smoother, more even skin tone, with improved texture and clarity.
IPL and laser treatments are not invasive and are of great benefit for targeting pigment. IPL treatments usually last between 10 to 30 minutes, with few side effects, making it a great option for individuals who want quick results with minimal downtime.
IPL offers a wide range of comprehensive skin treatments and with a focus on safety and efficacy, these treatments are changing the game for those seeking to improve their skin health without the risk of serious side effects.
At Monaco MedSpa we use the Lumecca IPL machine. The Lumecca is made by InMode, the makers of the Morpheus8 machine. Lumecca is one of the most powerful IPL laser machines available on the market today to treat pigmented and vascular lesions. Lumecca operates using photo-thermolysis, which provides a Photofacial through the delivery of a comfortable, painless light treatment. It is often referred to as a Photofacial because after just one session, patients notice significant improvements in their complexion and in the clarity of their skin. This is a great treatment for sun-damaged areas such as the face, neck, décolletage, legs, hands and arms - basically anywhere you have dark brown or red spots!
With 1 to 3 Lumecca IPL treatments we can significantly improve the appearance of:
Lumecca can be used on all areas of the body. The most common areas of treatment are sun-damaged areas. These often include:
Avoid direct, excessive sun exposure or tanning one month prior to treatment.
There may be some slight redness and warming of the skin immediately after the treatment, which subsides within an hour. Over the next day or two you may see a darkening of the pigmented spots. Then the week after, the pigmented lesions flake off, leaving you with smoother, clearer skin. After treating vascular lesions you may see the vein change colors for a few days before it is gone.
Results can be seen in 1 to 2 weeks. The skin will continue to look younger and more brilliant over time. Multiple treatment sessions will significantly improve the skin tone and clarity.
Most patients do not experience any side effects and any skin reaction usually resolves within a few hours. Patients may find they are sensitive to sunlight immediately after treatment. It is recommended to avoid direct sunlight and tanning one month prior and one month after the treatment.
Hyperpigmentation
Hyperpigmentation refers to an excess production of melanin, which causes dark spots or patches on the skin. IPL can help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation by targeting the excess melanin in the skin. The light energy from the IPL device is absorbed by the melanin, which then breaks down the melanin, which is naturally eliminated by the body. With repeated treatments, the appearance of hyperpigmentation can be significantly reduced.
Dark Spots / Age Spots / Sun Spots
Dark spots, also known as age spots or sun spots, are a common sign of aging caused by prolonged sun exposure. IPL can help reduce the appearance of dark spots by targeting the excess melanin in the skin. As with hyperpigmentation, the light energy from the IPL device breaks down the excess melanin, which is then eliminated by the body.
Red Marks
Red marks can be caused by a variety of factors, including acne, rosacea, or broken blood vessels. IPL can help reduce the appearance of red marks by targeting the hemoglobin in the blood vessels. The light energy from the IPL device is absorbed by the hemoglobin, causing the blood vessels to collapse and be reabsorbed by the body. With repeated treatments, the appearance of red marks can be significantly reduced.
Telangiectasias
Telangiectasias, also known as spider veins or broken capillaries, are tiny blood vessels that become dilated and visible on the surface of the skin. IPL can help reduce the appearance of telangiectasias by targeting the hemoglobin in the blood vessels, causing them to collapse and be reabsorbed by the body.
IPL treatments are generally safe and effective, with minimal downtime and side effects. Patients may experience some mild redness and swelling immediately following the treatment, but these typically resolve within a few hours to a few days. It is important to avoid sun exposure before and after IPL treatments, as well as to wear sunscreen.
IPL is a versatile and effective treatment for a variety of skin concerns, including hyperpigmentation, dark spots, red marks and telangiectasias. If you are interested in IPL, it is important that you come in for a consultation with our doctor to determine if it is the right treatment for you and to discuss your expectations and goals. With proper care and maintenance, IPL can help you achieve smoother, clearer and more youthful-looking skin.
